PRINCE NASEEM HAMED vs. WILFREDO VASQUEZ (Site)

Description : Here we have an original frank warren promotions poster for the WBO featherweight title bout held at the Nynex Arena, Manchester, England on 18th April 1998.

Britain's Prince Naseem Hamed overcame Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vazquez and a broken ring rope to retain his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) featherweight title in the Nynex Arena in Manchester. The referee stopped the fight in the seventh round after Hamed twice floored Vazquez before clinically finishing him off with a barrage of swift powerful punches. The bout was disrupted for eight minutes in the sixth round when one of the four ropes encircling the ring was broken. It could not be replaced and the match continued with only three ropes.

Hamed outpointed the 37-year-old challenger from the start but was hesitant in the early rounds, showing his experienced opponent due respect. Despite four official knockdowns he did not produce the fireworks expected by the crowd until late on and never seemed likely to deliver the second round knock-out he had promised. Vazquez, the former WBO champion and a tough campaigner of 60 fights, looked dangerous early on and twice sent Hamed reeling. Hamed sustained a bruised right eye and left himself open to the sucker punch by keeping his guard down. Vazquez twice headbutted Hamed after taunts from the champion.
