Bellew struggled to take in the enormity of his achievement and after 'fighting' at Goodison in the Rocky spin-off Creed, he has done it for real. And he recovered from a first-round knock down, which broke his nose, to stop Makabu in the third with a vicious left hook.

"If I'm being honest, I didn't think it would be possible," he said. "I thought the movie would be the closest I would get, but I've done it for real. "I've won the WBC title at Goodison Park and I've gone down not just in the boxing record books, but the Everton books too. "I'm the first boxing to fight at Goodison Park for a world title and I won it as well.

"It's just insane to think I've won a world title here. "I've just given you a Scouse Tommy Hearns and Marvin Hagler."
