LENNOX LEWIS vs. SHANNON BRIGGS (HBO) 

Description : Here we have an original HBO closed circuit poster for Lennox Lewis vs. Shannon Briggs, billed as "March Badness", contested on March 28, 1998 at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, for the WBC and Lineal Heavyweight Championships.

Lewis came into this fight a red hot 12-1 favorite against challenger Briggs, who in his previous fight had defeated George Foreman by a controversial decision to win the Lineal World Heavyweight Championship, thus setting up the showdown with the WBC champion. Lewis could have gone for a unification with Evander Holyfield but opted for Briggs, Holyfield could wait. Briggs hurt Lewis in the 1st round with a left hook and hurt him again in round 2 with another left hook, this was not in the script as far as Lewis was concerned, but he took control in round 4 as Lewis floored Briggs twice. Lewis continued to punish Briggs with power punches in the 5th round and knocked Briggs down for the third time with a powerful right hook at 1:09 into the round. Briggs laid flat on his back for 5 seconds but got back up at the count of 8 and continued with the fight. Lewis continued to pummel Briggs for the remainder of round 5 and after Briggs collapsed to the mat following a missed left hook, referee Frank Cappuccino stopped the fight and awarded Lewis the victory by TKO.
