At 22-0 (22 KOs), Benn defended his Commonwealth title against Michael Watson in front of a rapid & frenzied fight crowd in a heavily hyped bout in May 1989 at Finsbury Park, London. Benn true to form tore out of the starting blocks unloading his trade make hooks with abandon, Benn repeatedly failed to get through Watson's tight guard, and gradually exhausted himself whilst being stunned numerous times by Watson's precision counters. In the sixth round, Watson knocked Benn down with a jab and a gassed out Benn was counted out as he rose to his feet, albeit by a somewhat hasty referee's count. But the writing was on the wall.
