On December 5, 1998, Tapia defeated WBA Bantamweight champion Nana Konadu by majority decision to became a two-division world champion. | judge: Uriel Aguilera 116-111 | judge: John Poturaj 115-112 | judge: Franco Priami 114-114.
On May 27, 2012, Tapia was found dead in his Albuquerque home. He was 45 years old. Foul play is not suspected. Tapia died of heart failure. Hard upbringing & a hard life battling addiction.
