MIGUEL COTTO vs. MUHAMMAD ABDULLAEV (HBO)

Description : Here we have an official HBO Boxing closed circuit poster for the Miguel Cotto vs. Muhammad Abdullaev WBO Light/Welterweight Championship battle on June 11, 2005 at Madison Square Garden.

On June 11, 2005, Cotto faced the last man to beat him as an amateur, former Olympic gold medalist & granite hard, Muhammad Abdulaev from Uzbekistan. As amateurs, Abdullaev eliminated Cotto from the first round of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. This time they met as professionals in New York City's Madison Square Garden. From the first bell Miguel went on the offensive scoring repeatedly to Abdullaev's head and body. In the 4th round a left hook by Miguel hurt Abdullaev, who proceeded to focus his punches to Cotto's body. Abdullaev's offense was effective in the 6th & 7th rounds and as a result of this Cotto remained in counter-puncher mode. Following the 8th round, Abdullaev's eye was swollen to the point of being almost entirely closed. In the 9th round following accurate punches by Cotto the fight referee called time-out and asked the ringside doctor to examine Abdullaev's eye. After being examined by the doctor Abdullaev indicated to the referee that he could not continue, thus Miguel Cotto retained his WBO Light/Welterweight championship by 9th round TKO victory.
