American challenger Andre Ward, after being knocked down in the 2nd round won a highly controversial decision over reigning & defending light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. All three American juges scored the bout 114-113 in favour of the american challenger. Many people felt several rounds were highly debatable, while some felt american judges were biased toward the american fighter, while others lauded that the correct decision was made in favor of Ward. Some fans are claiming that it was the biggest robbery since the 2012 fight between Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley. Larry Merchant stated after the fight, "It was a classic hometown decision, Kovalev won the fight!". Gareth Davies, the Daily Telegraph boxing correspondent gave the fight to Kovalev with 115-112, as did HBO's Max Kellerman. The majority of the boxing press had Kovalev winning a close decision. "I have a lot of mixed emotions right now," Kovalev promoter Kathy Duva said. "We got a great fight, which is what boxing needed. But we also got a bad decision, which is not what boxing needed."
