I had the great good fortune to attend this cracking re-match at the MGM Grand as Leo Santa Cruz reclaimed the WBA featherweight title Saturday night with a majority decision over reigning & defending champion Carl Frampton - mirroring their first contest six months ago - except this time it was the Mexican-American puncher who out-boxed the Ulsterman. The two elite featherweights thrilled the 10,000 crowd with furious exchanges over 12 exciting rounds, Santa Cruz (33-1-1) avenging his only loss, to win the majority decision: Judge Burt Clemens scored the fight 114-114; Dave Moretti and Glenn Feldman had it 115-113....7 rounds to 5 to Santa Cruz. I had it even at 114-114...but no complaints here from me as it was such a close fight.

Mikey Garcia in only his 2nd fight after a 2 year lay off due to a contractual dispute with Bob Arums Top Rank, claimed the WBC Lightweight world title when he KO'd the granite tough reigning world champion Dejan Zlaticanin in 3 rounds. Garcia had already won world titles at featherweight and super featherweight. Saturday's win earned him the WBC lightweight title. This KO is an early candidate for knockout of the year in 2017. Garcia didn't destroy a soft-touch opponent. Zlaticanin was 22-0 coming into the fight and he'd never been dazed, let alone stopped in a fight before Saturday. Aside from his in-ring prowess, Garcia also displayed excellent sportsmanship when he showed legitimate concern for Zlaticanin's well-being after the latter laid on the canvas for a prolonged period.
