Description : Here we have an original full-size MGM Grand promotional closed circuit boxing fight poster for the vacant IBO world featherweight championship title bout held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, 7th April 2001.
MARCO ANTONIO BARRERA, the Mexican maestro, destroyed Naseem Hamed's lifelong pretensions to greatness by giving him a 12-round boxing lesson at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Hamed's technical limitations, for so long masked by his formidably powerful punching, were exposed horribly as Barrera dominated an intense fight. The result, a one-sided, unanimous points decision, left Hamed's American dream in ruins.
Hamed, who gave up the World Boxing Organisation featherweight title six months ago, was considered the best 126lb boxer in the world. This fight, for the vacant International Boxing Organisation title, was supposed to provide him with a belt to defend. Instead it left Barrera, who remains the WBO super-bantamweight champion, firmly in the No 1 slot. This fight marked a stylistic change for the previously hard-charging Barrera, who utilized sound boxing technique to easily defeat the highly unorthodox Hamed by unaminous decision, Judge: Chuck Giampa 116-111; Judge: Patricia Morse Jarman 115-112; Judge: Duane Ford 115-112
