Hector (Macho) Camacho wore what appeared to be a motorcycle helmet into the ring tonight, although it was pure leather. He could have used the real thing. Oscar De La Hoya hit Camacho repeatedly in the ear, nose and throat (mostly the ear), and it was either lose his hearing or go down. He chose the canvas in the ninth round, and De La Hoya (26-0) went on to retain his World Boxing Council welterweight title with a unanimous decision at the Thomas and Mack Center. The referee, Richard Steele, took a point away from Camacho in the 12th and final round for holding, but by that time De La Hoya had a swollen left eye from a head butt. ''I wish Richard Steele had taken a point away earlier to prevent all the holding,'' De La Hoya said. ''But he was tricky, hard to fight.''
