Granite hard reigning & defending champion Carl Thompson found himself without a championship belt after the referee Paul Thomas controversially stopped the bout at 1.42 of round 5. It took Yorkshire battler Johnny Nelson five rounds to undo Thompson and take his belt. Thompsons tendency to start slow and lumber his way though rounds was exploited by Nelson, whose speed befuddled the champion through three rounds. In round 4, a right hand sat Thompson down, though he survived the round. But in the 5th, a barrage from Nelson went unanswered, and the bout was stopped. Thompson protested, as did Sky commentators Glenn McCrory and Ian Darke.
