This bout was a rematch of their fight several months prior which was won by Spinks via a split decision. "I let him rob my house while I was out to lunch." - Ali reflecting on his loss to Leon Spinks. Ali's reflexes, overall movement and speech were impaired by this time. Unbeknownst to most then, he appeared to be in the early stages or Parkinson's Disease. The fight was televised live on ABC, which estimated an audience of 90 million. Attendance at the relativelty new Superdome was 63,350 and, at the time, the largest indoor attendance ever for a boxing match
Ali regained the WBA title by unaminous decision and became the first man to win the World Heavyweight Championship three times, the referree & 2 judges scored the fight: referee: Lucien Joubert 10-4 | judge: Ernie Cojoe 10-4 | judge: Herman Preis 11-4. Ali sent an official letter of retirement to the WBA in June of 1979.Promoter Bob Arum said he paid Ali $300,000 to announce his retirement because Ali's reluctance had delayed the scheduling of a fight between John Tate and Gerrie Coetzee for the vacant WBA title.
