Riddick Bowe is a former two-time world heavyweight champion, having first won the WBA, WBC and IBF titles in 1992, becoming undisputed heavyweight champion. Bowe's second reign as heavyweight champion was in 1995 when he won the WBO title against England's maverick WBO title holder Herbie Hide.

Bowe was now on the comeback trail after losing his title's to Evander Holyfield in the rematch at Caesars Palace Las Vegas infamous for the fanman episode who para-glided into the ring midway through the contest. In March 1995 Bowe picked up the less-regarded WBO belt by knocking down England's Herbie Hide six times en route to a 6th round KO such was the gulf in class.
